Mesothelioma and Asbestos

Asbestos, a mineral that naturally forms in the form of long, thin fibers. Workers who are exposed to asbestos on a regular basis risk developing mesothelioma and other lung diseases.

It could take a long time before symptoms begin to manifest after asbestos exposure. Different types of asbestos can cause different symptoms.

Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma is a type of cancer that occurs in the outer lung the lining (pleura). It is the most common mesothelioma type and is responsible for 70 to 79% of diagnosed cases. People with this condition feel chest pain and breath shortness and may experience the sensation of weight in the chest.

Exposure to asbestos, a family of minerals made of microscopic fibers, typically causes this kind of cancer. Once inhaled, the fibers cling to the lung and cause irritation which results in scarring and DNA mutations. The pleura is the area that surrounds the lungs and chest cavity, so these irritations can affect both the lungs as well as a person's heart. Mesothelioma symptoms usually don't appear until 30 to 50 years after exposure.

The most frequent symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are chest pain and shortness of breath. Some patients may also suffer from chest tightness or coughing. They may also experience difficulty breathing. Patients with this type of cancer have a history that includes asbestos exposure at work. The most common jobs that expose people to the risk of developing pleural cancer are manufacturing, construction and shipbuilding. People who served in the military are at a greater risk due to the widespread use of asbestos in Navy vessels and bunkers in the Army.

The most common staging method for pleural mesothelioma is the TNM (tumor, lymph nodes and metastases) staging system. The stage a patient is in when they are diagnosed will help their doctor determine the most effective treatment plan for them. For example, patients with a pleural mesothelioma in stage three or four have a poorer prognosis than those in lower stages. Stage four mesothelioma is often spread to the diaphragm, the liver or even a person's heart. This can make it more difficult to treat and increase the chance of complications for the patient.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Unlike pleural cancer, which forms in the lining of the lung the peritoneal cancer is a result of a membrane that covers the abdominal cavity, which includes organs such as the liver and intestines. As with pleural mesothelioma asbestos exposure is the primary cause of peritoneal mesothelioma. The disease is less common than pleural mesothelioma, and around 300-500 cases being diagnosed each year.

Like pleural mesothelioma, symptoms can take years to show. Typically, patients suffer from abdominal pain and a mass in the abdomen. The symptoms of this type of mesothelioma can also include nausea, weight loss and fever. Many of these symptoms could be mistaken for gastrointestinal problems which can lead to a false diagnosis.

Doctors can detect mesothelioma by examining the patient's medical history and performing a physical examination. They can also use imaging tests like Xrays, CT scans and PET/CT scans to detect mesothelioma. These tests can identify tumors and other cancer signs which aren't evident on X-rays.

These test results allow doctors to diagnose mesothelioma and determine the stage and suggest treatment options. The stage is determined by the kind of cell and if the cancer has spread.

Asbestos exposure is the biggest risk factor. People who have worked in asbestos-related professions, such as plumbing or electrical work, or in construction, manufacturing and manufacturing are more likely to develop the disease. However, even if people do not work in these areas they could be exposed to asbestos through relatives or other sources. Anyone who thinks they are at risk should talk to a doctor. If they have an history of exposure to asbestos and mesothelioma is a concern, a specialist will assist them in learning more about the risk.

Risk Factors

Asbestos is the most significant mesothelioma-related risk factor. It accounts for up to 80% of all cases. Exposure to asbestos can occur due to military service, work, or living with people who have worked with asbestos. asbestos litigation particles can be breathed in by those who are exposed to it. These particles can cause irritation to the linings and cause cancerous cells to develop in the mesothelium. After exposure to asbestos mesothelioma can occur between 15 and 60 years old.

Other risk factors include smoking, genetics, and the advancing age. People in their 40s and 50s are more likely get mesothelioma than people younger or older. It is because mesothelioma generally takes 20 to 60 years after the initial exposure before symptoms of cancer begin to manifest. It is important to note, too, that mesothelioma may occur in people who have been exposed to asbestos, but without having directly worked with it. This is known as secondary or indirect exposure to asbestos, and it could be as hazardous as direct exposure.

Smoking can increase the likelihood of developing mesothelioma due to the fact that it causes mesothelium damage and makes it more prone to asbestos litigation. Mesothelioma can also be caused by certain diseases, such as asbestosis and pneumonia. It is also important to know that mesothelioma occurs more frequently for men than women. Men are more likely than women to have been exposed to asbestos for a longer period of time and work with asbestos for longer periods of time. Also, men are more likely to live with someone who worked with asbestos and carry asbestos fibers from their workplace on their clothing. Women are less likely to come exposed to asbestos, and don't typically bring asbestos home on their clothes.

Diagnosis

It is difficult to diagnose mesothelioma since its symptoms are often similar to other diseases. Due to this, patients are often mistakenly diagnosed.

NYU Langone doctors will perform a physical examination and record the patient's medical background, including asbestos exposure. Doctors will also recommend an CT scan or chest X-ray in order to look for lumps, abnormalities, and evidence of asbestos case [Suggested Site] exposure. These include plaques on the pleura, pleura that are thickened and calcium deposits.

Other diagnostic tests include a magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI test, which makes use of magnets and radio waves in order to produce a series of precise images of the inside of the body. A surgical biopsy is a different method doctors use to diagnose mesothelioma. In a surgical biopsy doctors take a tiny piece of tissue from pleura or the peritoneum to be examined further. A pathologist can then examine the tissue with a magnifying lens to determine whether it contains cancerous cell.

Mesothelioma can be classified based on the mesothelial type involved, whether the cells are benign or malignant and also the location of the tumor, the type, and the stage of the tumor. Some types of mesothelioma have an increased risk of metastasizing or spreading and it's crucial to establish a clear diagnosis to ensure that the doctors can treat it prior to it becoming out-of-control.

Doctors may also conduct laboratory tests on a tumor to find specific genes, proteins and other factors that can help them describe the cancer's characteristics and plan treatment. These results are called staging.

Treatment

A mesothelioma diagnosis can be a frightening prospect. However, it's important to remember that the disease is treatable, especially in its early stages. Many people with mesothelioma live for many years without the disease spreading to other parts of their body.

Exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma in many ways. Asbestos fibers, which are too small to be felt or seen by naked eyes can be airborne, causing irritation to the lining of the lung (pleura). As time passes the irritation causes the formation of scar tissue that eventually result in tumors.

The pleura covers the lungs and heart and also the abdomen. Mesothelium is made up of cells that react to asbestos, causing it to inflame and create scar tissue. In time, these changes can cause the development of malignant mesothelioma tumors.

The signs of pleural mesothelioma can include breathing problems and chest pain, or the accumulation of fluid on the lungs (pleural effusion). In rare instances cancer may spread to the tissues around the reproductive organs and the heart.

A doctor will request biopsy if scans reveal a possible lung tumor or stomach. During the procedure, doctors will remove small amounts of the fluid or tumor for laboratory testing. The results will confirm the diagnosis of mesothelioma and determine the best treatment plan.

There are several types of mesothelioma treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Most doctors utilize a combination of these methods. Enrolling in clinical trials of mesothelioma treatments may be beneficial to patients. To learn more about the trials, patients should speak to mesothelioma experts who have experience treating the condition.
