Mesothelioma and Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that comes in thin, long fibres. People who are exposed to asbestos regularly risk developing mesothelioma and other types of lung diseases.

It may take decades before symptoms begin to manifest after exposure to asbestos. Different types of asbestos may cause different symptoms.

Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer of the lung's outer lining also known as the pleura. It is the most common mesothelioma form and accounts for 70% to 79% of diagnosed cases. Patients suffering from this condition suffer from chest pain and shortness of breath and may experience a sensation of heaviness in the chest.

Exposure to asbestos, a group of minerals composed of microscopic fibers causes this type of cancer. When inhaled, these fibers cause irritation and DNA mutations. The pleura is the area that surrounds the chest cavity and lungs and therefore, these irritations could affect both the lungs as well as the heart of a person. Mesothelioma symptoms are usually not apparent until 30 to 50 years after exposure.

The most commonly reported symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are chest pain and breath shortness. Patients may also experience coughing, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness. Patients with this type of cancer typically have a history of exposure to asbestos in the workplace. The most common jobs that expose people to the risk of developing pleural cancer are manufacturing, construction and shipbuilding. People who have worked in the military are at an especially high risk due to the widespread asbestos usage in Navy vessels and army bunkers.

The TNM (tumors lymph nodes, tumors, and metastases staging system) is the most popular staging system used to treat the pleural adenocarcinoma. The stage that a patient is in at the time of diagnosis can help determine what treatment plan they should receive. Patients suffering from pleural mesothelioma who is in stage three or four will have a less favorable outlook than those who are in a lower stage. Stage four mesothelioma may be spread to the liver, heart, or diaphragm. This could make the cancer more difficult to treat, and increase the chances of complications for the patient.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

As opposed to pleural mesothelioma that is a lung-lining cancer, peritoneal mesothelioma forms in the peritoneum -- it is a membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and organs like the intestines and the liver. Similar to pleural mesothelioma mesothelioma can be caused by asbestos exposure. Only 300-500 cases are diagnosed annually this is less than pleural asbestosis.

Like pleural mesothelioma, the symptoms can take a long time to manifest. Most patients are afflicted with abdominal pain as well as abdominal swelling. The symptoms of this kind of mesothelioma may also include nausea, weight loss and fever. A lot of these symptoms can be mistaken for gastrointestinal problems and can lead to a false diagnosis.

The doctors can detect mesothelioma through reviewing the medical history of the patient and performing a physical exam. Imaging tests like X-rays or CT scans can be used to identify mesothelioma. These tests can reveal tumors as well as other signs of cancer which aren't evident on X-rays.

These tests enable doctors to diagnose mesothelioma, determine the stage of the disease and suggest treatment options. Staging is determined based on the type of cell and whether or not the cancer has spread to other areas of the body.

The most important risk factor for mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos case (navigate to this site). People who have worked in asbestos-containing professions, such as electrical or plumbing work or in manufacturing and construction, are more likely to develop the disease. Even if an individual isn't employed in one of these areas, he or she can be exposed to asbestos through family members or other sources. This is why anyone who is concerned that they might be at risk should speak to an expert. If they have any history of exposure to asbestos attorney, a mesothelioma specialist can assist them in finding out more about their risk.

Risk Factors

Asbestos is the primary mesothelioma-related risk factor. It accounts for as much as the 80% of cases. Exposure to asbestos can happen through work, military service, or living with someone who used to work with asbestos compensation. When exposed to asbestos, the particles can be inhaled into the lungs and abdomen. They can cause irritation to the linings of the abdomen and trigger cancerous cells to grow in the mesothelium. After asbestos exposure, mesothelioma may develop between 15 and 60 years.

Other risk factors include smoking, genetics and aging. The people in their 40s or 50s are at a higher risk of developing mesothelioma compared to those who are younger or older. This is because mesothelioma usually occurs between 20 and 60 years after the initial exposure before symptoms of cancer begin to manifest. It is also important to note that mesothelioma can develop in those who were exposed to asbestos, but did not engage directly with it. This is called indirect or secondary exposure to asbestos lawyer and it can be just as dangerous as direct exposure.

Smoking increases a person's chances of developing mesothelioma since it damages the mesothelium and makes it more vulnerable to asbestos. Mesothelioma can also be aggravated by certain diseases, such as asbestosis and pneumonia. Men are more likely to develop mesothelioma compared to women. This is because men are more likely to be exposed to asbestos and endure a a longer period of exposure than women. Men are also more likely to have lived with someone who had worked with asbestos, and to have asbestos fibers on their clothing. Women are less likely to come into contact with asbestos and rarely carry asbestos home on their clothes.

Diagnosis

It is difficult to identify mesothelioma due to its symptoms being often similar to other diseases. Because of this, victims are sometimes wrongly diagnosed.

NYU Langone doctors will perform an examination of the body and document the patient's medical history, including asbestos exposure. Doctors will also recommend a CT scan or chest X-ray to check for lumps, abnormalities, and evidence of exposure to asbestos lawyer. These include plaques on the pleura, pleura that are thickened and calcium deposits.

Other diagnostic tests include an echocardiogram, which examines the heart and blood vessels, and a magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, test that uses radio waves and magnets to create detailed images of the interior of the body. Another method doctors use to diagnose mesothelioma is through the procedure of a surgical biopsy. In a surgical biopsy doctors remove a small piece of tissue from the pleura or peritoneum for further testing. A pathologist will then look at the tissue with a magnifying lens to determine if it contains cancerous cell.

The mesothelial type involved and the benign or malignant nature of these cells, as well as the location the cancer, its type and the stage of the cancer are used to categorize the disease. Certain types of mesothelioma may be more likely to develop metastasis or spread, so it is important to get a definite diagnosis to ensure that doctors are able to treat the disease before it goes out of control.

Doctors can also perform laboratory tests on tumors to determine specific proteins, genes or other factors that will help them identify the characteristics of cancer and plan treatment. These results are referred to as staging.

Treatment

A diagnosis of mesothelioma can be a frightening prospect. It is crucial to remember, however, that cancer can be treated, particularly in its initial stages. Many patients with mesothelioma live with the disease for a long time, without spreading.

Exposure to asbestos can trigger mesothelioma via a variety of mechanisms. Asbestos fibers that are tiny enough to be felt or viewed by naked eyes, can become airborne and irritate the lining of the lung (pleura). Over time, the irritation leads to the formation of scar tissues, which eventually lead to tumors.

The pleura is the area that surrounds the lungs and heart, as well as the abdomen. Mesothelium is made up of cells that react to exposure to asbestos and cause it to enflame and create scar tissue. As time passes, these changes result in the growth of malignant mesothelioma cancers.

A shortness of breath, chest pain or fluid accumulation on the lungs are all indications of pleural mesothelioma. In rare cases, the cancer can be spread to the tissues around the heart and reproductive organs.

A doctor may request biopsy if scans reveal a possible mass in the lungs or stomach. During the procedure doctors remove some of the fluid or tumor to allow for laboratory testing. The results will confirm the diagnosis of mesothelioma, and also determine the best treatment plan.

There are a variety of treatment for mesothelioma, such as chemotherapy and surgery. Most doctors utilize the combination of these methods. Patients may also benefit from taking part in a clinical trial of new mesothelioma therapies. Patients can learn more by consulting a mesothelioma expert who has treated the condition.
