In 1907, the first time it was opened, Porto Rico was founded by Italian immigrant Patsy Albanese. At the time, Greenwich Village was seeing an increasing number of Italian immigrants who had opened establishments to cater to their dietary requirements. Albanese named the shop after the famous Puerto Rican coffee beans price she imported and sold - a beverage that was so popular in the present, that even the Pope would drink it.
Today, Porto Rico sells 130 varieties of beans from all over the world at three locations in New York City including their Bleecker Street location, Essex Market and online. The company also roasts their own beans and provides wholesale distribution to 350 restaurants in NYC, Brooklyn and Brooklyn.
Peter Longo, current owner and president, was raised in the family bakery located on Bleecker Street, where his father was the owner of Porto Rico. He still runs the shop in a similar manner as his father and grandfather.
Sey Coffee
Sey Coffee, a coffee shop and roaster, is located along Grattan Street, in Morgantown. This neighborhood, located in Brooklyn's Bushwick district is located on Grattan Street. Co-founders Tobin Polk and Lance Schnorenberg, both 33 started roasting in the fourth-floor loft located across the street from their new location in 2011 under the name Lofted Coffee (with local clients including Greenpoint's Budin and Soho cart service Peddler).
Sey's decision to buy micro-lots, and even whole harvests from single farmers has earned it the acclaim of New York City coffee beans in bulk enthusiasts. Last year, Sey purchased a six-bag micro lot of Danilo Dones Sitio Catucai from Brazil's Espirito-Santo region. The beans were handpicked at peak ripeness, floated to eliminate any defects and dried fermented for about 36 hours before being dried on the farm. The result is a blend with hints of berry lemongrass, and melon.
Sey's commitment extends beyond its shop to improve the overall wellbeing of staff and growers, as well as its customers. It utilizes composts and biodegradable disposables to keep waste from the landfills. This helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and also nourish the soil. It also does away with gratuity, which places baristas in the position to provide their livelihoods and inspire them to concentrate on their profession.
La Cabra
La Cabra, a modern specialty coffee company, was founded in Aarhus in Denmark in 2012. It began with a tiny shop and a committed team. The shop is equipped with the La Marzocco Modbar and the cups plates and bowls are made by Wurtz ceramics, a father-and-son studio located in Horsens. In a recent interview, Atlanta Coffee Shops General Manager Ian Walla revealed that La Cabra serves 250 different coffees a yea and typically has seven or eight varieties on offer at any time.

The Roasting Plant, a multi-unit coffee retailer, roasts and brews its coffee on the spot. Each cup is brewed and roasted according to your requirements in less than seconds. It searches the globe for the highest-quality specialty beans that are directly sourced offering customers a choices and high-quality.
Their on-site roaster utilizes fluid bed technology, which is a bit different to the classic drum-type machines used in many UK coffee shops. The beans are blown around in an enclosed box heated by high-speed air, which keeps the beans in a suspended state and allows them to be roasted in a steady manner throughout the machine.
I tried the Sumatran coffee and it was rich with a velvety mouthfeel, dark chocolate aromas were present and the coffee started to cool while you sipped and subtle aromas of citrus fruit were evident.
The roasted coffee will be transferred to the store's Eversys Super-Automatic Brewing Machines to be brewed according your preferences in less than a minute. Customers can pick from a variety of single origins and a variety of blends.

Parlor Coffee was founded in 2012 in a barbershop equipped with a single group espresso machine. It has since developed into a flourishing coffee roastery, whose beans are sold in top cafes restaurants, cafes, and home brewers throughout the city. Parlor Coffee is dedicated to sourcing only the highest quality beans that have all been through a long journey before arriving at its roasters.
According to their own words in their own words, they "have a relentless passion for craft and a conviction that good coffee should be available to anyone." They achieve that by creating a simple streetscape that is a mix of residential and commercial. Think compost bins, a chalkboard welcome handmade up-cycled items, and a minimalist deco.
They roast their own blends (there were six when I was there) and single-origins, but they also hold cuppings on Sundays, which are open to the public. Think of it as an artisanal tasting room in which you can smell and taste the beans, from chocolaty to earthy (one was very tomato-like!). It's a little off the beaten track, but well worth the trip.
