How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged or cracked window is an issue. This could be an opportunity to upgrade your Windows seal replacement to energy efficient or insulated ones and enjoy benefits such as improved comfort, increased resale value and reduced utility costs.

You can do it yourself at less than what it would cost to employ an expert. You'll need only the proper tools and a few hours of your time.

Glass

Replace your single-paned windows with tempered insulated glass to increase energy efficiency, cut down on noise, and preserve the historic integrity of your old home. The replacement windows panes of the window pane is easy and can be accomplished by most homeowners who possess basic hand tools. You'll also require an additional window pane, glazier's tips pliers, and latex glaze putty. If necessary you may make use of a heat gun to warm the old putty. Wear safety glasses and gloves before you begin. Working with broken glass could result in serious injuries.

Remove any broken glass pieces remaining. It is best to use pliers, but a flathead can be used as well. Use a wood chisel, or putty knives to remove any old putty remaining around the frame and window sash. Be careful not to damage the window sash. Work slowly and carefully. It is recommended to work using a sturdy ladder rather than the ground and have someone stand below the sash to help hold it in place.

Make sure that the window frame is ready to accommodate the new pane once you have removed the old glue. To allow for seasonal expansion or contraction, subtract 1/8 inch each from the measurements of width and height. These measurements can be taken to an hardware or home centers store to have an item cut from glass stock to the proper size. You can cut the glass yourself if you have the appropriate tools.

After putting the new pane in place, run a small bead of caulking around the edges to ensure it is weatherproof. Install a glazier's point on both sides of the frame. This will secure the pane. The points shouldn't be too tight that they create friction between the sash and frame, but they also should not be too loose.

Before applying the putty to the surface, gently knead it until it is soft and free from lumps. Make it into pencil-sized strips. Apply the first strip to the corner of the frame. Work from one corner to another to ensure it's even and smooth.

Glazier's Points

The glazier's points are the small triangular pieces which help to secure glass into a window frame without damaging or scratching the delicate surface. It's easy to understand how to use this secret tool, and you'll save money on the cost of an expert installation.

Once the old putty and the glazier's point are gone and the frame is thoroughly cleaned with a knife to eliminate any remaining residue. Lightly sand the frame in the rabbet grooves if needed to smooth rough areas. If you do sand your wood, be sure to protect it with painter's tack to avoid accidental damage.

Take the dimensions of the frame and write down accurate measurements. Take these dimensions to a hardware store or home center and request that the new pane made slightly smaller than the frame's opening. This will ensure that the pane fits perfectly and allows for expansion and contraction.

Place the new pane in the frame and press it into place firmly with your hand. Make use of the point of the chisel, or the back of the putty knife to smudge the glazier's points as shown in Figure 11. When you're done, they should be flush with the top edge of the pane. the shoulders that are raised of the points should be just below the rabbet's rim groove.

Apply a thin layer of glazing compound on the edges of the glass that has been made and into the rabbet grooves, to seal and protect them. Allow it to dry and cure fully.

Once the glazing compound has dried it's time to put in the new window sash. First, coat the wood with a thick layer of linseed. This will keep the new putty from soaking in the moisture and drying out and cracking over time. Apply the coating using a brush this coat, or even the tip of the blade. Then use the chisel on the back of the putty tool or the back of the handle to gently hammer the new sash or glazier's point into rabbet grooves. Repeat this process at intervals of 10 inches around the frame.

Putty

A baseball thrown at you or an unintentional rock, or falling branch could cause a window pane to crack or break. Most windows can be repaired easily by putting in a new piece. The glass is held in the position with a tiny metal clip, also known as a glazier's point and putty. This compound is also called glazing compound. Remove the old pane and clean the area with the rag, a scraper that is a pull type or a wood chisel. Wear safety glasses and gloves when working. You'll need a heat gun when the window is fixed into the frame.

If you are planning to reinstall your original sash, you must remove the molding that holds the old pane. Sand the sash until it is flat and ready for new caulk. Once the sash is installed then, you can apply a silicone caulk over the glass. This will ensure that it doesn't be leaking or fade over time.

Take out the glazing points in the rabbets. These are the grooves in the sash, where the glass is. If they're hard to chisel, hold the hand tool, such as a heating gun over them to soften first. When using a heated tool, be sure to avoid damaging the sash or its railings.

Prepare a bed for your new pane after you have removed the old putty and glazing points. Roll a rope of glazing compound between your fingers, and make it about 1/2 inch thick. Press it into the rabbets, where the glass will be put. The glass should rest against the putty on both sides. If needed gently tap your glass window replacements into the rabbet with your thumb.

If the new pane has a crack then you can seal it with a solvent-based glass glue or silicone caulk prior to pressing it into the sash. If the crack isn't sealed, you'll need to apply putty to keep water from getting in. After the putty has dried remove the oily film off the glass and let it dry completely before painting. Paint before the putty has completely dried. It won't make a strong seal and could be leaking or discoloring over time.

Paint

You may be concerned about replacing a damaged piece of glass. It's true that replacing a single pane glass doesn't need to be costly even if you do it your own. In fact windows with double panes can be replaced for only a fraction of the cost of a window replacement of a professional.

If you're working with a large glass window first ensure it is securely fixed to the frame. Using the proper tools and techniques to accomplish this task fairly easily and speedy.

When you are ready to start, remove the old window pane. Remove the metal glazing points that are attached to it. They are basically tiny metal triangles that function as "nails" which hold the window in place within the frame of wood. They are submerged beneath a bead or glazing putty that sets to form an unbreakable wedge that holds the frame in place and hides the points.

After taking off the old pane clean the frame and wood. Scrape away any paint and sand down the rabbet grooves, where the glazing points were. These should be sanded to the point of being bare, so that you can paint them the same shade as the rest of the frame. After sanding, apply a layer of flax oil on the wood's surface to extend the life of the frame.

The next step is to measure the dimensions of the window's opening. It is necessary to measure the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the entire opening as well as the thickness. To determine the exact dimensions of the new pane, subtract 1/8 inch from both measurements. This will also allow for expansion and contraction of the glass during seasonal change. You can bring these measurements to a hardware store or home improvement shop and get the glass cut for you.

Now, it's time to bed the new window sash replacement pane. To do this, place the pane inside the frame and move it around until a 1/16 inch of putty remains between the edge of the glass and the sash on all four sides. Use a putty knife to smear the putty evenly, making sure that there isn't an excessive amount of excess putty in the corners and along the edges. When the putty dries, it can be painted with the same color as the frame to prevent water and air from leaking into the frame and causing fogging.Replacement-Doors-300x200.jpg
