Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an attempt to return to the traditional sextet style and an even more consistent and powerful album with a sharper edge. Its edgier sound reflected the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's greater ability on the drums and an improved, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate, and less derivative than on previous efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album a few months later, and went on a world tour promote the album. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before.
